How I Built My Hobbit House Using the DIY Kit
Creating a magical hobbit house for my fairy garden was a delightful journey of imagination and craft! With my DIY Hobbit House Kit, I had everything I needed to build a cozy, enchanting miniature home perfect for outdoor or indoor display. Here’s how I brought it to life, step by step!
What’s Inside the Kit?
- DAS Air Hardening Modeling Clay (1.1 lbs / 500 g)
- Wooden Rings: 1 large (2.1" / 5.5 cm) and 2 small (1.3" / 3.5 cm)
- Wooden Craft Sticks (5 pieces)
- Wooden Dowels: 1 small (⌀ 3/16" / 0.4 cm, 1.5" / 4 cm) and 4 large (⌀ 3/8" / 0.9 cm, 6" / 15 cm)
- Mason Jar Solar Lights Lid with 30 LED solar fairy string lights
- Natural Tree Bark (2" x 5" / 5 cm x 13 cm)
- Bamboo Sticks (6 pieces, 5.9" / 15 cm)
- Cotton Cord (27.5" / 70 cm)
What You’ll Need
- Glass Jar: A jar with a ~2.5" (6 cm) opening. Mine measured 7" x 3" x 3" (18 cm x 8 cm x 8 cm).
- Natural Moss for decoration.
- Plant Coaster or Pot to serve as a base.
- Soil: To stabilize the house and sculpt its surroundings.
- Glue: Wood glue, craft glue, or hot glue.
- Sealer: To make the house durable for outdoor use.
- Small Tools: For shaping clay and cutting materials.
Step-by-Step Guide to Building the Hobbit House
1. Prepare the Jar
Start by cleaning your glass jar to ensure smooth adhesion. If using solar lights, make a small hole in the jar’s lid to fit the light string through later. A jar with flat sides works better than a round one, as it provides a more stable surface for attaching materials. Ideally, the jar should measure approximately 7" x 3" x 3" for the best results.
2. Shape the Clay Walls
Roll out the DAS clay into a ¼" (0.6 cm) thick sheet and wrap it around one side of the jar to form the house’s main structure.
Cut out three holes: one for the door and two for windows. Smooth the edges using your fingers or a small carving tool. Let the clay dry for 24 hours.
3. Assemble the Door and Windows
Door: Use the large wooden ring to create a round door. Glue craft sticks behind the ring and trim off any excess. Add a small piece of dowel to make a tiny door knob. Once assembled, glue the door into the clay opening.
Windows: Use bark strips to create cross-shaped window frames and glue them onto the small wooden rings. Attach the completed windows to the smaller clay holes.
4. Build the Roof Structure
Cut the large wooden dowels into 1" (2.5 cm) pieces and attach them vertically around the jar using glue to form support beams. Glue wooden dowels across the beams to create a rounded roof frame.
Then lay a layer of clay around the wooden dowels to create the roof shape. Allow the clay to dry completely.
Once dried, layer natural tree bark over the structure and glue it on top to complete the rustic roof.
5. Anchor the House and Add Soil
Place the hobbit house on a plant coaster or pot. Surround it with soil for stability. For added durability, mix some clay based soil with water to create a clay-like texture and apply it around the base.
To illuminate the hobbit house, make a tiny hole to thread the solar light string through and place it inside the jar. Position the solar panel itself outside, nestled on the moss for a natural look.
6. Decorate with Moss and Final Touches
Cover the roof and surrounding soil with natural moss for a lush, organic look. Insert the solar light string through the jar lid and place the light inside the jar.
Creative Extras
- Pathway: Create a pathway with bamboo sticks and hemp rope for a whimsical touch.
- Plants: Add mini succulents, ferns, or tiny flowers around the house to enhance the natural vibe.
- Additional Décor: Incorporate small twigs, acorns, or pinecones for extra charm.

Hi there! I would love to order a couple of these and surprise my daughters with them in the garden this spring. How do I protect them from the elements? I.e. rain/sprinklers/etc? I would guess now that i am typing this that given the structure is mostly clay and covered in moss that it’s not a problem but should i seal the wooden bits?
